Smart Home

Smart Home switches loads at home (water heater, lights, pump, socket) through Shelly relays, from GridEon's data: solar surplus, battery, time, sunset and sunrise. Everything stays on the local network, without the cloud. The inverter and the battery are still only read.

How it works

  • GridEon talks directly to the Shelly relays on your home network (Gen1, Gen2, Gen3 and Pro). It reads their state every few seconds and sends them the commands.
  • The Smart Home page in the menu has three tabs: Devices (on / off, power, energy), Automations (the rules) and History (every command, with time and reason).
  • Home shows a strip with the devices' state.
  • Who can switch: the owner, an invited technician and the local screen can switch devices on and off. A viewer only sees them. Devices and rules are added from a phone or computer.
  • The local screen and the relays are on your own network; access to them inside the home is up to you.

Adding devices

  1. Set up the Shelly relay in the Shelly app, on your home Wi-Fi (the same as GridEon).
  2. In GridEon: Smart Home → Devices → Search the network. For each relay found give a name (for example "Water heater") and a type, then Add.
  3. If it doesn't show up, use Add by IP. If the Shelly has a password, enter it there.
Fixed addressGive the Shelly relay a fixed IP in your router (DHCP reservation). GridEon finds it again with Search the network anyway, but with a fixed IP you don't have to update it.

Automations

Each rule controls one device. You build it from lists, and under the form the rule is written out in words so you see exactly what it does.

RuleWhat it doesExample
Solar surplusSwitches on when the battery is nearly full and production exceeds the house consumption; off when the surplus is gone.Water heater, heating
ScheduleOn and off at fixed times or at sunset / sunrise (± minutes), computed from GridEon's location. Also across midnight.Yard lights from sunset to 23:00
Battery protectionSwitches the load off when the battery drops below a threshold, optionally only during a power cut; can switch it back on at a higher threshold.Pump, during a power cut below 30%

Example: water heater on solar surplus

GridEonsurplus · battery Shelly Pro 1PMrelay, in the panel 25 A contactorcoil from the Shelly Water heater 2–3 kWheating element Wi-Ficontrolpower The Shelly does not carry the heater current: the contactor does. Panel wiring is done by a licensed electrician.

Wiring: a Shelly Pro 1PM in the panel drives the coil of a 25 A modular contactor, and the contactor powers the water heater. In GridEon:

  1. Add the Shelly named Water heater, type Water heater.
  2. Automations → New rule → Switch on with solar surplus, device Water heater.
  3. Recommended values for a 2 kW heater:
    • On when the battery is at least 95% and the surplus at least 1.5 kW for 2 min;
    • Off when the surplus drops below 0.3 kW or the battery below 90%, for 2 min;
    • Minimum on 5 min, minimum off 5 min (the relay doesn't toggle with every cloud);
    • optionally only between 10:00 and 17:00.
  4. Save. History then shows, for example: "Water heater on surplus: on — surplus 2.1 kW, battery 97%".
What surplus meansSurplus = panel production minus house consumption. While the heater is on, GridEon adds its own power (measured by the Shelly or declared in the rule) back to the surplus, so it doesn't switch off because of its own consumption.

Rule safety

  • Without inverter or battery data, rules never switch anything on. A load switched on by a surplus rule is switched off after 10 minutes without data.
  • A manual command pauses that device's rules for an hour (the card shows "Resume now"). Battery protection stays active.
  • A surplus rule switches off only what it switched on. A heater started by hand stays on.
  • Each condition must hold for a chosen time (the confirmation time) before switching on or off.
  • Wrong thresholds (for example the off threshold above the on threshold) are refused with an explanation.

Lights, small loadsShelly 1 Gen3 or Shelly 1 Mini Gen3 (in the wall box)No power metering; fine for schedule rules.
SocketShelly Plug S Gen3Only for loads under about 2 kW.
Pump, several circuitsShelly Pro 2PM / Pro 4PMEach output is added separately in GridEon.
Panel meterShelly Pro 3EMGrid and consumption per phase; as a GridEon data source in a coming version.
Electrical workPanel wiring (relay, contactor, breakers) is done by a licensed electrician. Large loads are switched through a contactor, not directly through the Shelly relay.

Other relays and integrations

  • Working now: Shelly Gen1, Gen2, Gen3 and Pro.
  • Coming / on request: plugs and relays with Tasmota or ESPHome, Sonoff in DIY mode, Modbus relay boards on RS485 or through a GridEon Gateway (including SG-Ready for heat pumps), Zigbee devices through Zigbee2MQTT, EV chargers through OCPP.
  • Have another device? Write to contact@grideon.ro and we'll look at integrating it.

FAQ

  • Does it work without internet? Yes. GridEon and the relays talk directly on your home network.
  • What happens during a power cut? If GridEon and the router are powered (for example from the inverter), the rules keep working; a protection rule can switch off large loads. After restarting, Shelly relays return to the state set in the Shelly app.
  • Why didn't the heater switch on? Open Automations: under each rule "Now: …" shows the current values (surplus, battery) and what it is waiting for. History shows every switch.
